safe mode access in xp - nothing works!

By stella29 ·
A friend had just gone online using broadband - with NO virus checker & NO firewall (aargh!). He phoned, saying his home page had been hijacked by a porn site, and he had suddenly become worried (!). So I went round, managed to delete (through Add/Remove Progs) stuff that was hijacking home page (also checked Internet options). He's using XP Pro. Then I downloaded Sygate personal firewall, then small anti-virus prog from Major Geeks. He wanted Kazaa as well, so got only version I could find (2.1). Then went to Trend pccillin & downloaded trial version, because it's always been fine as far as I've found. HELP! Rebooted. Got to WinXP start page, desktop appeared, Kazaa appeared in Systray (even tho I'd set it not to be launched at startup),pccillin flash screen appeared, then hourglass symbol. Splash screen went down to taskbar. Hourglass over task bar, won't let me access anything at all, anywhere. Cntrl/alt/del won't work. Can't access safe mode booting up - tried F8, F5, Esc, Del. He hasn't got XP disk cos already installed when he bought pc. I feel so embarrassed. Any advice, pls?
Someone said to me last night that maybe kazaa.exe had seated itself in startup - but I can't get there.

F8 should put you into the 'safe' mode but you have to get the timing exactly right, just after if has finished the system boot checks and just as it starts to load Windows. To early and ti is not recognised, too late at it is ignored. Sometimes it takes a few tries to get the timing right on some machines.

Once you can get into the system you will need to adjust registry settings to disable the Kazaa virus (hey it acts like one so I call it as it is).

First option would be to run the system restore with a date prior to his initial problem.

Next choice is to run 'REGEDIT' from the 'Start' >> 'Run'. Then to go through the various registries looking in the entries for HKEY_Local Machine, HKEY_Current User, HKEY_Users. In each one there is an entry under 'Software' >> 'Microsoft' >> 'Windows' >> 'Current Version' >> 'Run' Some will also have on called 'Run Once'; check all those with 'Run' in their title at thast point. Delete the Kazaa entries and anything else you feel should be deleted.

If you cant get into 'Safe' mode then you will need to see who sold him the PC for the software discs, suggest you do this anyway as they should have supplied them.

BTW Win XP Pro has a reasonably good built in firewall via 'Control Panle' >> 'Network Connections' >> the connection that he uses for the Internet whatever its name >> then double click on it, activate the 'Properties' button; open the 'Advanced' Tab, then 'tick' the 'Internet Connection Firewall'

Cheers, mate. F5 brings up safe mode screen but up/down cursors won't go to it. Just remains on "Windows will start normally in x... seconds" and it lies, because it doesn't! It's tantalising me now, hanging access to safe mode over my head going, "D'you wannit? Huh?Huh? Tough!" Have even tried F words but they don't help either...
