Samba Shares Delay

By corey ·
Been trying to figure this out for months
Setup is a Linux Redhat7 FileServer with latest Samba....clients are 7 Win98 2ndEd 3 Win95b and 2 Win2000. Problem is in when the clients boot up...their shares and the browsing are available only after about 3 to 5 minutes of being logged on and running...Internet conectivity is there(supplied by Webramp)......we have reset the os levels but still the delay is there...???

Check your mount statement on the clients. If you are trying to access the linux server by name, is it DNS and are there any other DNS time issues, i.e. try to telnet to the server by name.

On the server side in smb.conf you should check how you are handling browsing. Is the Linux server fighting other servers on the network to determine who the master browser will be and that sort of thing.

Also on the server, what kind of security are you using? user, domain, etc. You should compare other functions on the same level to see if that is causing a problem.

Finally, look at your network settings in smb.conf - mux, xmit, ttl, packet size.

Hope this helps.

Ran into the same problem Too much broadcasting going on. Setting up samba as a wins server speeded it up a little but setting up samba as a PDC made the baby fly.

When you tell your client to join the domain use the IP address of the samba server and not the domain name.

I know this will help good luck and enjoy.

Most likely your Samba server has underscores ('_') in its NETBIOS and/or DNS names.
Windows networking does not like underscores in NETBIOS names if it runs over TCP/IP.
