Same Applications on Different OSs, Can

By nabeedi ·
Hi All,
I want to install two different OSs, Win98 and WinNT, also, I want to install MS Office, that can be run from those OSs. Meaning I should not install MS Office on each OS. Is there any way to do so?
any help will be appreciated.

If I understand your question correctly, you would like to dual boot, and run the same application in either OS, but without having two separate installations which eat up disk space.

That's relatively simple. Once you've gotten your OS's installed, start the MS Office installation, but put it in a folder visible from both OS's, like \Office. Once the install is done, boot into the other OS and run the MS Office installer again. Specify the same installation location as you did before, \Office.

When you do it this way, you are running the installation twice, but there's only 1 copy of the main program files because the second installation overwrote the first. To use the software in either OS, you have to run the installer to be sure the proper information gets placed in the registry.

It's simple, easy, and it works.

Good luck.

My understanding is that Answer one is correct for most Office versions, but I hear rumours that it may not be possible for Office 98 and Office 2000. My advice would be to suffer the extra disk space if it were a production machine, but risk it ifits a test machine.

If you are going to try answer #1, just make sure you choose a compatible disk format (FAT16). NT won't read a FAT32 partition and Win98 won't read NTFS.

I've heard the same rumors that Guy has but I have not tried to use the same program files from different OS. I have, however, accessed the same data using different versions of the program in a dual-boot setup.

No.1 is correct. You also need to make sure that you select identical options for each installation.
