Same old same old, but worse?

Locked

by boxfiddler ·

Virtually everything I click on today nets a Page Not Found error. I can’t access My Workspace, My Forum Posts, Discussions, etc…

What little I can access takes multiple clicks of the Refresh button to get loaded. Even then, pages only partially load.

What’s up with that? Hmmm?

I am in Double Trouble

In reply to Same old same old, but worse?

ever since the site redo, I have had problems with this site
and Safari on Vista. It just stops responding every few clicks.
Well, it is worse today + I have been getting 404’s
constantly.

Only briefly

In reply to Same old same old, but worse?

I only noticed an interruption between about 1:30 and 1:50 EDT. Maybe there have been others that I didn’t notice because I was, well, you know … working.

Not just TR

In reply to Same old same old, but worse?

I’ve noticed some flakyness with over a dozen machines this morning and afternoon. Comcast, Yahoo and even Google have been hitting with 404’s and page not found all day. Just now seems to be getting better. I wonder if it might have something to do with the system admin in SF that locked down the cities fibre WLAN. Sure was flaky for a while and was apparent on multiple sites I’ve visited. Strange indeed.

I have not had any issues with 404, but I have noticed it takes a loooong time for a post to go.

Much worse

by nicknielsen ·

In reply to Same old same old, but worse?

This is the first time I’ve been able to get past the front door all day. Even the feedback page gave a 404.

Not trying constantly, but it was a slow day (which I needed! 😀 ).

Edit: And just to add insult, I got a 404 back when I posted this.

Microsoft Update KB951748

by zlitocook ·

In reply to Same old same old, but worse?

This was a big problem for Zone Alarm users. But it could also be a problem for other programs.
MS did not do a lot of testing before releasing this patch and if your system was set to automatically update you got the patch.
This is for the DNS spoofing of real servers and has been shown to be a real problem for the internet.
You can remove the patch and see if that fixes your problem. But first I would delete cookies, temp files and go in to each profile on the computer and delete the temporary internet files.. If you have never done this it will remove all saved passwords, saved drop down IE searches and other things but may fix your problem.
I would check my host file and the event viewer to see if it shows any problems.
I would also down load Spybot search and destroy, ADaware free and CCleaner. From another computer, put these on a flash drive and update them before running them on your computer.
404 and page not found can be many things you should be sure it is not your computer before call your ISP.
There are other things to try but do these first and reboot after trying them to see if they work.

I’m not having any problems anywhere else. CNN, BBC, PCMag, and everything else I’ve tried to access today work just fine. It’s only TR that’s presenting a problem.

by boxfiddler ·

Still can’t access My Workspace, My Forum Posts, My Contacts, post a reply without backing up to try multiple times. Sometimes refresh loads the other things, sometimes not.

Multiple times today TR has flat out crashed – at least that is what it looks like at this end. An hour or two later, it’s back up again, but troublesome to navigate.

What is up with this, TPTB? At least drop us a clue, please.

until the recent disappearance of the avatar box. It did the same thing, on the same page, and never gave me any trouble.

I don’t let anything update automatically. Learned that the hard way, and quite early in my computing life.

I’m with you on that one Boxy …

by older mycroft ·

In reply to I didn’t either…

I only allow “Notify” on the updates.

Then I can decide what to download and what to invoke.

There HAVE been the odd, isolated cases, (I know you’re going to think me crazy for even saying this!) where EVEN just downloading code was enough to throw a computer into spasms.

I sit with the ‘notify’ routine, then wait until I think it’s safe to download, based on whether there’s a list of errors or not on the web itself. Even then I can still get caught like I did with the ZoneAlarm fiasco!!

• #2926286

I assume….

In reply to I’m with you on that one Boxy …

you lot don’t allow your AV to update automatically then.

It is no different!!!

Why do I ask this – there has been rare times in the past where a rouge AV update has brought down servers.

So AV – Auto Update??

• #2926280

Nope…

by boxfiddler ·

In reply to I assume….

don’t allow AV to auto-update either. I have one day a week that the first thing I do with my morning coffee is check updates for programs that need updating.

Windows Update is once a month.

edit: probably should note that I’m talking about my home machines.

it somehow was switched on. I didn’t and wouldn’t knowingly switch it on but SP3 came through as an automatic update and I’ve been trying to sort the mess out ever since.

I normally use two PC’s

by rob miners ·

In reply to Same old same old, but worse?

one in the house and one in the shed. The one in the house had a few problems introduced by me this morning. I had this bright idea that it may have been caused by the red X in explorer and outlook so I turned of downloading of pictures. It wasn’t the TR problem but I had some fun getting it to work again on XP. I still got the errors even after cleaning cookies, temp folder and resetting IE7. The same thing is happening on the PC in the shed which runs Vista. Constant 404’s and the Maintanence Page.

yesterday was bad also. today (16th) has been ok

by neon samurai ·

In reply to Same old same old, but worse?

I had the browser crashed out two or three times when loading ad frames when links where working. There was then a long while where 404 was the only thing any link lead too; it was followed by a “servers down for maintenance” which seems to have refreshed the system.

Hm.. needs a reboot regularily to keep running.. are they really running the http cluster with IIS?
