Saving in Word

By BarryVG ·
Situation: Word 97/Outlook 97; User is opening Word attachments in Outlook, then saving. The default user folder location is a mapped drive. However, when the user goes to Save As, the location the app is attempting to save in is the C:\Windows\Temp folder. I believe this is due to fact that the document is new and has never been saved, and is an email attachment, therefore, Word is using the Temp folder as the file-save location and not the standard default. Am I on the right track or is my thinking all awash? Appreciate any guidance.

I believe Outlook has a default place it looks at to save attachments when you do 'save as'. Mine always points to temporary internet files (Office 2K / Outlook 2K).

See the following MS link.

You're abolutely right. Word has opened it as a temporary file. You'll have to navigate to the correct folder.

You can also right click an unopened attachment.

To do what? The user is opening the attachment in Word, then saving, expecting the default mapped drive to show up as the folder in which the file will be saved. The Windows\temp folder is what is showing, not the expected folder.

Please note the referenced MS link is for Outlook 98 and not for the Outlook 97 application my user is using.

Hi Barry

We had the same problem for users in my office. Seems that when you open an attachment as per your example, Windows default save location is the temp folder.

If you choose Save as, rather than Save, the user should be able to click on the drop down menu and choose where to save the attachment.

I'm assuming though you want to change the default file location so user does not have to do this. Please post back with operating system and will get the registry key you need to change.

Regards
