Scan Disk Not Completing

I am unable to complete a scan on my Windows ME computer. When I attempt to defrag, I get a message that there are errors on my local hard disk, and it suggest running a scan first, but I cannot complete a scan. Is there something I can do to get my computer to allow the scan, or do I need to purchase a utility software.
