scandisk - should run from Dos or from w

By nkling ·
When I try to run scandisk on my C: drive from Windows 95 it hangs up. I believe it is because the swap file is open. If I disable the swap file can I restart my PC?
I ran scandisk on the C: drive from the dos prompt and it didn't find any errors.
I want to defrag my drive but want to check for errors first. Does running scandisk from Dos show an accurate picture of my drive?

Scandisk in dos is just slower but both perform the same tasks, running from safe mode should allow both scandisk and defrag to run, make sure screen savers are off, antivirus disabled, etc.

If you ctrl-alt-del the task list will come up and end each task except for explorer as that is windows. I wouldn't mess with the swap file unless it is necessary. Good luck

Try surface-scanning the disk, mark any bad sectors found on the disk, and then u can boot into the OS and run the defrag. If it still hangs, we need to find more info on whether any other applications are running in background or somthing alike. Maybe booting in safe mode and then defraging the disk is not a bad idea.
Cheers
