    SCO /var/adm/messages and syslog problem

    Locked

    Hi

I have a problem with the messages and syslog files on a Sco OpenServer 5.5 box. We had to remove and recreate them on Friday, but I (stupidly I know) didn’t note the correct ownerships and permissions and they aren’t being written to now. Can anyone enlightn me? The logs are in /var/adm

    Many thanks

    Matt

I don’t think its a permissions problem. Syslog is run as root so it can write anywhere. A snapshot of my system shows owner root, group root and a permission set of 644. Be sure the new files are named correctly (case, punctuation, etc.). You can check this in your syslog config file. Also, you might just try restarting the syslog daemon. It would have become unhappy if it tried to write the logs during the time that they were removed from the system and a restart will correct that. Good luck.
