Screen Freezing–Hard Close–software solution

Never had it before. Alienware laptop nVidia Qudro GO FX 1400 82.26 driver is my guess. System resources are high: 3.8 Ghz, 3G RAM. Any software solutions out there to help?

  lets try some basic steps first
  
  booting in safe mode – does the problem happen again?
  
  changing the screen resolution lower setting, does it stop issue from returning?
