Screwed Up Context Menu & File Extension

By debho ·

Please help. I made a beginner's mistake. :-(

I wanted to replace Notepad with Notepad+ (

So I followed the instructions, made a backup of my C:\WINDOWS\Notepad.exe, and copied the Notepad+ EXE on top of it.

You experts know what happened next. My Windows File Protection kicked in and automatically restored my original Notepad.exe.

Now, when I right-click on a text file and choose Open With, there are two Notepad choices on the context menu.

One of these choices works fine and opens the file in Notepad.

The other Notepad entry on the context menu doesn't work. It kicks out the following Notepad error: "The filename, directory name, or volume label syntax is incorrect."

It also kicks out the following Explorer error: "Windows cannot find 'C:\file.txt'. Make sure you typed in the name correctly, and then try again. To search for a file, click the Start button, and then click Search."

How can I get rid of the wrong Notepad link on my context menu?

(PS. Any idea how I can replace Notepad with Notepad+?)
