Search Engines will not work

By len.piko ·
The system in question is a laptop with Pent. 4 2.66GHz. with 960MB ram running win xp.
No matter what search engine I use it will not initialize to process the search. Also it doesn't matter whether I use the touchpad on the laptop or an attached mouse. Any help with this issue will be appreciated.

search engines will not work

by len.piko In reply to malware?

I tried bitdefender, avast and malwarebytes.
No sign of an infection. I also upgraded to IE 8. Now I can choose from the drop-down list of search engines next to the address bar. I can do searches from here.
Once I get to the websites I can't do a search from within the websites themselves.
Any other suggestions will be welcome. Thanks.
