Search isn’t working in WinME

I am having a frustrating time searching for files. The file search window comes up but after entering *.html or index.htm* and clicking the search button not a thing happens – no errors reported, the stop search button fails to light up… basically, nothing happens. Have you any suggestions? I have tried reinstalling windows to no avail.
