seeking job in Los Angeles

I've been working as an IT project manager in NY City's financial district for about 12 years. Now, I'd like to move back to Southern California, preferably LA or Orange County. What are good resources for seeking a job there, finding good recruiters, and targetting financial and money management firms?

Find a prospect and present yourself.

The noted links are ways for the lazy to slowly persue the daunting task of standing out against a lot of people competeing for a single position.
I don't see how this topic keeps coming up, is it really that hard to sell yourself to a potential employer??
Why don't YOU choose who YOU want to work for based on the company size, achievements, offerings, staff etc. Then you will find a position that you like working for a company you respect.
Web searches have a track record of less than 8% job placement, for some reason they are still popular though. the newspaper is good for 2% success rate. I forget who printed these stats but I used them when I worked as a motivational speaker for job clubs.

Here's what I do:
1)decide where I want to work (you've done that part)

2) Decide what I want to do, IT, Marketing, sales management, etc.

3) Research the companies that interest you, products you like, nice view from office or whatever turns your crank

4)Prepare a written pitch (yes, just like telemarketing) Hi I am ... I have .... I will.... I would like to meet with you to discuss my abilities further and see if there is a way that I can benefit your organization (or something similar)


6) Interview time!!

If you make 20 telephone calls like this you WILL get an opportunity to see someone, this will be a relevant interview that NOBODY else is competing for and your drive will motivate a potential employer to hire you whether he needs you or not. A few of those types of interview and you have your dream job. You didn't wait for emails from prospects, you didn't wear out a pair of shoes walking from office to office, yuo didn't even need to buy a newspaper. But you have the job YOU were looking for. This formula works with an 80-95% success rate, those figure are from first hand experience with hundreds of students.

Absolutely Correct!

I have been a career coach for a new years and wrote a book, The I.T. Career Builder's Toolkit. While I tell my clients to go ahead and post your resume if you want but do not sit around waiting for that email or call.

Meeting the owners/managers at a company allows you to "act" as though you have some power over the process. I say "act" because most job seekers act as though they are at the whim of the economy and that NO opportunities exist.

But opportunity exist, even in a recession. As Bolles points in What Color Is Your Parachute, there are always people who move or die.

I tell my clients that the mantra "It's not what you know but who you know." is false. It should be, "It's not only what you know but who knows you and whether they know what you know."

You greatly increase your sphere of influence when you have a network of contacts (even brand new contacts met while picking up that latte) who know somewhat about your skills and desires.

That way, when they are out to lunch with one of their acquaintenances and the person they are with mentions the need for a particular skilset (your skillset) you get the referral.

This often leads to interviews where no competition is even in the running. And as a friend of a friend you stand a much better chance of being the selected person - with better compensation.
