sending photos by e-mail

I am suddenly having trouble sending photos (even small ones – 400Kb for example) by e-mail. My e-mail provider (Telewest Blueyonder in the UK)is splitting the messages up into tiny bites and as many as 32 are sent – and received as gibberish. Help please!
