Serial mouse

At work i have reinstalled windows 95 on an old PC. before i did this the mouse worked – perfect. Now after the new installation of windows, i move the cursor horizontally and the movement is jerky. Have tried absolutley everything i can think of. reinstalled drivers, cleaned mouse. etc. please help.
