Set-up fails for program installs

By jeffedit ·
I have a WinXP proff. laptop that now when I run setup to install a program, the hour glass comes on for 30 sec or so then nothing. In taskmanager I can see setup, but nothing else happens. 2 different programs are doing this (not MS software). Tried the programs on my Win2000 system and they installed fine. Ideas?
Thanks in advance.

This is not an upgrade. One program is an installer for a photoshop filter pack, the other is a program for plugins for a video editing application. Again, works fine in Win2K.

Could be a problem with the windows installer service. Could be the slammer virus. Are you installing off CD? Could be the CDrom needs cleaning/replacing. Installing off network could indicate NIC problem, or rights problem.

I ended up running Ad Aware and it found quite a few things.
Seemed to help.
