    I’ve tried to set this up several times.. even RTFM and online help.. gets as far as dialing out, checking login & password, then just disconnects. The correct modem is configured, phone number and account info is correct.. what am I missing here? Any suggestions appreciated *g* .. I have a 3-way boot (win98/win2k/mandrake 7.1) but feeling like an absolute “newbie” in Linux..

      I know this may sound mundane but have you validated the electrical circuit. I have experienced this before only to discover that the circuit was using a common ground and producing much too much line noise. Even though I was able to use the circuit previously, the line noise just kept magnifying. Try connecting your computer to a different circuit if you are not already using a dedicated circuit.

      Update: I’m now able to connect to my ISP and get an active connection.. I just can’t get “out” to the world. I’ve tried getting on websites in Netscape, retrieve mail, etc.. nada..zip.. but I’m “on the web” .. oh well..halfway there. At least I’m connected now. I’m sure it’s a simple setting I’m missing.

      I had the same problem…try the following

      Expect – ogin:
      Send –
      Expect – ord:
      Send –

      Timeout – 5

      That worked for me…hope it does the same for you.

      Okay, I’ve had this problem with a USR Modem… specifically one of their 56K Modems…

      In order to connect, I’ve had to add the following into the KPPP program. I’d have to check where in the module it is, but it is where the initialization string is…

      ats38=0

      This turns off the .v90 portion and seems to have made my connection more stable. Whether or not this is the problem for you, I can’t say for sure – but it may be worth a try.

      In KPPP setup check your modem location /dev/* make sure it is the same as it is in drake sometimes the modem setting doesnt work point it directly to your modem /dev/*
