Sharing Outlook email data

By mcook ·
Is it possible to share the same Outlook mail file across two computers connected to a network. I have 2 computers in my home connected to an ethernet hub and a shared internet connection. I would like to be able to use one of the computers as my "main" email computer, but I would like to be able to share the email data with the second computer. I have attempted to redirect the location of the email files on the second computer to a drive mapped on the "main" computer, the Outlook does not seem to like sharing this info across a network. Any ideas?

If you are trying to access the same pst file over the network that is already open on the main machine, it won't work. But you can share a pst file as long it is not open on the other machine.

Ok It is all about security. You can't share the email data. Outlook used the data extension .dbx can be found at Find Files\Folders But unlike exchange you can make the .pst to be shared and configured at both PC.

You can try to set up a seperate account to act as a delegate to be able to check your mail. This will allow you to log on as someone else and check your mail. You should also be able to check the box to leave the messages on the server and still set up outlook on the other system and pull down all your info. I know that this will work because my system at work can be locked up(nt or win2000) and when i get to the house, i can still check and see all the mail that I have at work on our servers.

If I were in your situation I'd just create a second account on the other computer and have your first one forward all your mail to the other.

FYI: most ISP's allow two or three seperate email accounts.

:)
