Sharing Scanners and XP

By Harry Hardin ·
I cannot share my HPscanjet 5470C on my two XP systems. HP told me it won't work and referenced a note in the MS Knowledge Base that said you cannot share scanners on XP. This is hard to believe. HP says its MS problem and I can't get an answer from MS. Any suggestions.

Not only scanners

by TheChas In reply to Sharing Scanners and XP

Scanners generally cannot be shared.

Neither can most all-in-one machines.

Some of the newer all-in-one machines do finally support sharing the printer function.

IMHO, both Microsoft and the scanner manufactures have made a conscious decision to not write the code required to allow the sharing of scanner devices.

When you look at how you need to use a scanner, it is VERY impractical to attempt to use a scanner that is NOT connected to your PC.

If you place a document in a scanner, then walk back to your PC to initiate the scanning process, what stops someone else from placing their document on the scanner, or opening the lid while you are in mid-scan?

In addition, when you run a scanner it uses nearly 100% of the resources on the source computer.

For home use, it is a pain, but for business use, the most effective way to share a scanner is to set up a work-station for scanning.

With a separate work-station, the user just walks up to the scanner, scans their document, and saves it to a shared network folder.

Then, they go back to their work-station, retrieve the file and continue working.

1 trip to the scanner instead of 2.
The person who's PC is connect to the scanner is not disrupted.

For home use, or a small office, their is an alternate way to share a USB scanner.

You can get a USB switch (not a hub).
Connect the scanner and PCs to the switch.
