Shaw just got better (I hope), anyone else?

By Oz_Media ·
Well Shaw cable in Vancouver has just opened up a new service for Cable internet subscribers.

Instead of the 3MB cap they now have a 5MB X-treeme service. Now from what I have discovered, the difference between 3 & 5 MB down is not a major difference for general surfing speed but would come in handy for running a server as the upload is also increased (not too sure on the up stats but they are proportionately increased as the down speed is).

With SHAW residential service yuo cannot run a home server or a private domain, they require business service for that (which I get from a separate provider for my other boxes).

Therefore, based on the home server restrictions, is the speed increase REALLY going to offer any benefit for most surfing. Sure I may be able to download HUGE games a few minutes faster but I get a pretty stable 2.8 -> 3 Megs down anyway, nearly a consistent speed close to th cap, which beats local DSL service that stays at 1.5Mb.

Does anyone else have a 5 meg down on thier home cable service? Have you used a 3 meg and upped to 5?
Any other benefits that MAY make it worthwhile? It's only another $10.00/mo but that's on top of the current $84.00 (including 60 cable TV channels). So it would be nearly $100.00 month for 5 meg plus all the cable channels, where are the benefits for general surfing, email etc?
