Shortcut for Win9x and W2K

By s-chao ·
I try to create a shortcut for Win-9x and Win-2K clients. This is a shortcut to a .bat file. When clients login to Novell server, there will be an icon for this shortcut.

Win-NT and Win-2K clients have no problem running the shortcut, but Win-9x clients get "out of environment space" error. I could modify the property of this shortcut, whose type became Shortcut to MS-DOS Program. Win-9x clients have no problem with the new type, but NT and W2K complaint about a .PIF file.

Is there a way to create a shortcut that works for Win-9x, NT, and W2K.

place an if statement in your .bat file.

If Exist c:\windows\win.ini goto win9x
<Run WinNT/2k stuff>
goto end
:win9x
<Run Win9x stuff>
:end

This is how it was done at my last job. I am unsure of the syntax above, but it should give you the general idea.
