SID's showing under security

By david ·
We are running in mixed mode. Windows NT domain controller w/SP4. Windows 2000 servers w/SP2. We migrated an NT server to Windows 2000. We built a new server used robocopy to copy data and security from the old server to the new server. Got ridof the old server. Problem, when we go to a folder and look at the security all we see are the SID's. This started happening about a couple weeks after the new server was put into place. If we reboot the server it seems to work again for a coupleweeks.

Any ideas?

SID's showing under security

When the SIDs start showing, it is because the machine is unable to resolve the SIDs to a domain account.

Have you been having any problems with clients not being able to login or transfer files, or excessive login times?

2 possible work arounds to test would be to...

1. Rename the account or reset the password-anything to make a change to the account

2. Remove the user from the ACL and "save" then add them back. Try a reboot between the R/R as well if they neither fix intially works.

Hope this helps!

If just a few user accounts are involved, add / remove the users as a temporary fix. If the same accounts have the issue repetedly on different servers, remove / recreate them following a few AD replication cycles. If many or all appear as SIDs on that server only and this reoccurs or comes and goes this can indicate an issue with: The server account (right click, reset it from mmc Active Directory Users and Comp.); AD Replication (increase frequency / find DC BDC your server is authenticating to, if it is not getting replicated to, find out why - it may be DNS resolution, etc.) This should get you started; the key is to try to find the root causes for the SIDs appearing in your particular situation and address that / those issues (or the issue may come back).

Sorry, the initial answer was geared to a Win2k Domain with NT40 servers; however, the same "find the root cause" approach holds true for the opposite environment: If it is isolated to a few specific user accounts, remove / recreate them. If not, find out which DC the server is authenticating with and use that information to determine if it is a PDC BDC replication issue and address that issue. If the issues are limited to that server regardless of which DC it authenticates with, the source maybe the server's machine account (you may need to remove it to a workgroup and re-add it to the NT40 domain in that case).

Looks like some sort of replication problem. We rebuilt the PDC emulator and so far have not had any problems.

Thanks
