How does this browser / site monitoring tools work ?

Do they have a plugin installed in all the browsers in my computer ??

Or they collect the details from somewhere else in my computer irrespective of what browser I use ?? If yes where is the information about the sites in visit store apart from browser history portion ??

some use their server logs, some use cookies, some use HTTP-Referrer headers,
along with various software tools.
