Site doesn't work if Adsense is disabled

I run the Ghostery Chrome plugin to block tracking, and noticed that the new TR doesn't like it very much. In fact, Techrepublic won't work unless I enable Google Adsense in Ghostery. Not sure why that is, but I figured it out with trial and error. If Adsense is disabled, I can't click on links, the image slider on the front page won't work, and the page won't load more posts when I scroll to the bottom.

I've never seen this on any other website. Any thoughts on why that happens?

Typically the tracking code in a website is embedded in the footer

Or if there is so much tracking code it is in both the header and the footer.

I think in this case there is so much code it's baked into the page navigation controls. I could be wrong but I think that has to do with running full page CSS animated ads with Javascript.

I think what's happening is Ghostery is making the whole CSS/Javascript code **** up, and when it fails, out goes your navigation code as well.

Yeah, that's probably what's happening...but this is the only site I've seen that has problems with Ghostery. Everything else works just fine. It's like their site relies on tracking to the point that it doesn't work if tracking is disabled.
