slow boot - startup controls

By richardhurn ·
win 98 had a great utility "windiag" for selecting which startup items you wanted to launch.

Cannot find such control tool in win 2000
& hoping to avoid using regedit.

Anyone know how to control startup items?
also hope don't have to use mccsnap-in manager ( Arghhhh!)

Yes, MSCONFIG is what you need. It has a Startup tab that displays everthing in the Startup folder AND in the RUN section of the Registry. You can then uncheck anything you don't want to run on boot.

Now, NT & 2K both do not come with MSCONFIG bydefault (but XP does!). So, go here to get a good 3rd party MSCONFIG for Win2K:

hope this helps

great idea - but the downloaded msconfig is wierd- puts me into aclosed loop on reboot without turning off the programs I tried to stop - nice interface, but the reboot loop is way confusing

Also, if you're brave enough to go into the registry, you can find 'msconfig' there.

go to start, run, regedit. Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\Microsoft\windows\Current Version\Run.

This lists all startup programs.
