slow ppp connection

By rajiv7374 ·
I have a redhat linux 6.2 running kernel 2.2.14 and I have a very slow ppp connection.
My ISP used chap (MD5) and I am able to connect to the ISP successfully but after I connect if I ping the isp the packets return after 20,000 ms approx. but somereturn after 150 ms followed by a period of no activity. I am confused to what might be the reason for this. I have checked the interrupts and there is no interrupt clash. I feel that there should be some kernel parameter which should be set or there should be some parameter that should be passed to the pppd.

A likely cause (at your end) is a slow serial line, or that your modem speed is not configured properly (assuming your ISP has his stuff running smoothly :) However, keep in mind that there may be external factors.

One of things you can try (if you have an external modem connected via a serial line), is setserial, like this:

setserial /dev/modem spd_vhi

which sets the speed of the serial line to 115kb/s (see manpage for details).

The other options is to set your modem speed, which depends on what ppp-stuff your using.

Take a serious look at your entries for DNS servers. Make sure that you have the correct addresses for all of your ISP's DNS servers. Most of the time, a slow response can be traced back to DNS issues.
