By SiaoMAx ·
recently i fixed up a desktop with pIII800 n 128ram both at 133 MHz and a 20gig hd at 7200
but the start up always take about a minute or two and sometimes even longer
than sometimes when i try to shut down the ME it will display a blue screen and says system halted

can anyone help mi with this problem thanks a million
p.s i suspect problem may lie with my motherboard(mayb faulty)but anyone got other solutions

One I would update the BIOS,then boot to bios control panel and check to see if the mother board is configured for 133mhz bus, also this will be true for the IDE drive running at 7200,is the motherboard updated to handle a 7200

It sounds crazy, but whenever I get any problems, my first check is the C:\temp directory. Microsoft is notorious for not cleaning up the temp files on disk and I've seen it create random problems(such as yours), when this directory is not clean. Remove all files and directories from the C:\temp directory(except maybe the VBE directory, if it's there - you can keep this). Most other files can be deleted from this directory without fear, since any applications that would normally create folders/files in this directory will re-create them again.

Just to let you know i have ME and i get the blue screen more often then not. Also i talked to someone else who had ME and he says he gets it once in a while too. I just restart the system and all is ok. But i don't have an answer but the other person who says check the bios sounds good. Otherwise, like you say, i would check with your motherboard manufactuer.

Have you downloaded all the Windows ME updates, not just IE5.5 SP1 but there is also some critacal updates as well.
I use ME and after updating all seems OK

The update page is http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/default.htm

It sounds like you have Anti-Virus or System Recovery software (like GOBACK) running at startup. If either be the case there is your culprit. Disable the anti-virus in the BIOS. As for GOBACK, I've known it to get some people out of a mess from time to time but it slows down your system terribly. It's always writing to disk. ME's RESTORE facility does work well and it's integrated into the OS seamlessly. So I would use it and drop anything additional. Don't know if any of this fits your situation, but good luck.

although i reject but i tink you may be rite but teach mi how to remove the GOBACK cause i tink anti-virus would not slow down the com that much thanks in advance
