    Slow System Response

    Locked

    by hmccarty ·

My system is running very slow. When I press Cntl + Alt + Del the list seems to be very long. I fear that some of these things are just taking up resources. How can I tell what is really needed and what is left over from installs that no longer have relevance?

The task manager lists only those processes that are currently running. If you ahve a lot of programs that load up at startup and sit in your system tray, you could start by closing those. Such programs could be AIM, Real Player or other programs. These are all using memory and could be closed if not needed in use. Start there and clean up those that you are not using

To expand on the previoyu snaswer, if you have WIN98, got to Start-Run, type msconfig, OK. Look at the startup tab for a list of all the programs that load at startup. Delete any of these that you don’t really need, like the aforementioned AIM andReal Player. Also AOL, if ‘t in the system tray.

And if you see something like Microsoft FastFind, get rid of that too. It sppeds up finding files on your hard drive, but if you have a slower processer, or less than 64 MB ram, it can really slow you down.

Go to start bar and select run.
      Type msconfig.
Click on the startup tab when msconfig window opens.
The list shows all the tasks running at that moment.
You can deselect tasks to run at startup by removing the tick for the relevant entry.
To see what a basic system uses start in safe mode and press Ctrl+Alt+del.
If I remember correctly it only requires Explorer and Systray.
