SMTP configuration

My local domain name is: mydomain.net and my external mail format is username@mydomain.net.
if the network username is different than the mail username i have problem receiving Emails,
I have the same problem with distribution lists for some reasons sometimes they dont work.
Any one has an Idea how to resolve this problem?

Are you using exchange or just clients with e-mail clients such as mozill t-bird?

I am using MS Exchange server 2003 in a windows 2003 active directory environment.
