SMTP Port 25 is in Stealth Mode

By cjtech ·
I am unable to receive mail from my ISP. My logs show an Etern message being sent, but
no mail is being returned. When I try to telnet onto port 25 from inside the network
it works OK, however if I telnet from outside the network it fails. I tried shields up from www.grc.com and port 25 is in stealth mode. I have reloaded Exchange, RAS, and Proxy. What else should I try. What can block Port 25.

Do you have a firewall? If yes, do your firewall using CVP? Do check on this. This might occurs when 3rd party tools is installed. EG: Norton Gateways.

If you dont have a firewall. I will assume your exchange server is behind a proxy? You need todo some configuration of you are in such a scenario. Do check on the Technet: Exchange behind proxy.

Cheers!

I am running small business server and this means that the exchange server software and proxy software co-exist on the same machine. Does this mean exchange is behind the proxy? I don't know. I have one network card and a dialup to an ISP. Thereare to IP addresses because the dialup IP address is server assigned, and the IP address of the internal network is local. There is no firewall on the site.

If you are running Exchange behind a proxy server, you need to install the proxy client and a configuration file. Microsoft has an article on this on their Knowledge Base (article Q181420).

Basically, your proxy server is listening on port 25 but then doesn't know what to do with any traffic it receives. The process described in the article cited above is how you tell the proxy server how to forward the port 25 traffic to the Exchange server.

I have managed a work around. I have added a pop-connector to small business server and added all users. This is working seamlessly using port 110 and the users on the network are back up and running. http://www.microsoft.com/SBSERVER/downloads/POP3.asp. Thanks your you comments, it has given me direction and helped me to arrive at this solution. Thanks
