I joined Facebook primarily because some TR Members were there already and urging me quietly to join in the fun. I have, indeed, had some fun and look forward to more fun.

I picked up playing some game apps, only to discover that one must have a large network of 'friends' to advance through various levels. I argued considerably with myself as to whether or not to indiscriminately add strangers for the sake of playing the games. I started adding strangers as I do like to play well, and even win.

Much to my surprise and delight, I have come to know any number of remarkable people. Just as I have here at TR. Sure, there's been an idiot or two who was immediately upon discovery of idiocy dumped. But all in all, I am enhanced by knowing people from all over the world.
For the sake of gaming. Whoda thunk it?

As I watch 'real life' communities disintegrate and become disheartened by it, I also watch a burgeoning 'social network' community enlarge, grow, enable each other to deal with a variety of miseries.

'Social networking' websites are filling a very 'real' need. I wonder, why/how it is we can't seem to fill that need 'in real life'.

real life..

by Shellbot In reply to So...

is so much mroe disappointing though.
to create a real community, one needs to work at manners, courtesy, kindness, sharing... too many people are all "me me me" these days. Online its generic. we are all the same. we can go on, play nice nice and say the things we wish we had the courage to say in real life..and when we get tired of it, we log off and b!tch about the neighbors dog, and the way its a disgrace that so and so doesn't care for thier yard as much they should.
Its so much easier to cultivate online friendships, as we don't have to interact with those people in a real way and see them with thier all thier flaws.

Real Life?

by Michael Jay In reply to real life..

Wish I knew what it is, this "real life", thing I try not to be disappointed by it but by keeping my expectations high on people they tend to let me down when I least expect it.

I will blame it all on tv, it makes the world as you would like it to be, not the way it is. By painting a picture of how life could be but it is make believe, not real, unattainable in reality except in short segments of our lives that are true bliss.

I sure wish I knew what I am talking about.

Real life?

Remind me - what was that again?

Do I have one?

Actually, I need to GET a life. Anyone seen one up on eBay lately?

yeah, ok, I'm at work......

Interactions and flaws - didn't see any of the latter, and thoroughly enjoyed the former with everyone last June. Still rather chuffed that everyone was as expected and their were no "online personas" around.

Odd, that's what I like about this crowd.

Several are a bit weird, a few are downright bizarre, but I don't think there's a phony in the bunch.
