Social Engineering

Just wondering; how come the end user can be socially engineered into running innumerous malicious attachments but won't run the anti virus definition updates sent by the network administrator?

Try spicing up the subject line with something provocative and a script to execute the update.

I gave up, now they can't reach the internet at all without updating :) It's auto-matic. They get a screen to update and if not, no internet access at all.

Ever watched win98 install and look at all the pretty pictures (and realised you just wasted 20-30 minutes?). You could put a slide show of data getting lost, people who's lives are ruined by lost data, etc. Hence, building shared meaning of the importance of carrying out the update.

Otherwise they may lie awake at night wondering if they made the update.
