Socket assignments

By dsiverson ·
Using W2K Prof Server. How do I setup different sockets so that the Internet use is on one and workstations are accessing the server's hard drives on another. This is suppose to spread out the use of the bandwidth and be more efficient. I really don't know what I'm talking about - just what I've been told. Please lead me in the right direction

If you are using Starband for your Internet access, I suggest you log in to their support pages. They have a number of PDF documents there to walk you through various setups.

Sockets won't "improve" efficiency or spread out the use of bandwidth. Perhaps your advisor meant ports instead.

Most communications equipment vendors have simple "recommended" setups available at their Web sites and at the retail outlets. For someone with limited technical background and no budget to hire expertise, I recommend these be used even though they rarely provide the best solution for any specific operation.

There are a number of network, configuration, and application customizations to address specific performance issues. However, the starting point always is with what you are trying to accomplish. Unless you have a performance issue I would not begin tweeking.
