I guess there is no correct definition for software engineering as it is still maturing field! I think you can refer a book titled "practitioners approach to software engineering" authored by Roger R Pressman and you can find lot of stuff about "software engineering".

Hope this helps.

One who develops software is said to be a Software Engineer (which of course could be much more appropriately expressed as a Software Developer, or Programmer). These individuals generally hold MCSD certification vs. Systems Engineers that generally hole MCSE or NSE certifications.

Software Engineers manage DATA.
System Engineers manage HARDWARE.

OH! it's amazing that my earlier answer has been rejected but I believe you've asked the definition for "software engineering" but not "SOFTWARE ENGINEER"?!!

If I'm right about your question and if I remember well, what I've studied in my master's about software engineering was that there is no concrete definition.

Of course, I do not know how to find out the book I was mentioned earlier on internet! But, I know one thing that I've refered this book for many times and thought about s/w engineering and testing for many people.

Engineering is a discipline. There is mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, civil engineering, manufacturing engineering and software engineering. All engineering practices follow a methodical approach to the development, testing and implementation of a product. For software those practices are tuned specfically for software development.

I would define software engineering as the discipline or practices used to develop, test and implement computer software.
