Sofwate automatically starts abnormally

Desktop running Win98se abnormally starts “AOL startup screen” and requests password information. It happens while NOT dialed into AOL (ex: working with word document, playing games or during an ordedrly shutdown). Neither AOL or AOL Instant Messenger is set to automatically start. Is there another location to check to determine the cause.
