I have an odd problem I have not been able to track down with Internet Explorer 6.0 and I can?t get any help from MS because they don?t support the product yet.

I have noticed that I can?t download files from web sites with IE6 when the web page link invokes FTP. Some downloads seem to work, others don?t. In particular, I?m having problems getting files from the TechRepublic web sites. An example is: ftp://ftp.techrepublic.com/support/template/interviewdownload.zip

Upon trying this download, I always get a ?server cannot be found? error, but if I use an FTP program to transfer the file, it works just fine.

It seems like this happens most with either .zip or .exe files. It also seems to be web site specific. For example, I can download drivers for my video card, but can?t download anything from http://www.download.com.

I have already tried to disable my virus scanning software, setting lower security options in IE6, etc. etc.

Are you conecting from a lan?
If so is there a proxy server or firewall?
If so chack with your network administrator to findout if there is some sort internet filter, or server side virus protection.

I should have mentioned this in the first place… I am dialing into an ISP. I have checked with them and they do not block anything. Some of the web sites I can’t download from are ones I had no problems with when using IE 5.0 and IE 5.5. One example is the web site for SETI@home. When clicking on the link to download the file ftp://ftp.cdrom.com/pub/setiathome/setiathome-3.03.i386-winnt-cmdline.exe I get an error, but I can use the stand alone FTP program that came with windows and get the file just fine. Obviously, the FTP method is a lot more work.
