Sound Editing Software

I have a Sony Digital Voice Recorder, and I need to be able to modify the sound files it creates to cut out background noise and enhance the recorded voices. The file format is *.dvf and the Sony software can convert it to *.wav.

Can anyone suggest any good applications?
