Sound recording problem

By md3mnx ·
Hello,
Hope someone can answer the following question.

I have just installed Win98SE on my other computer. My problem is this....
When I open the multimedia properties to adjust levels etc I notice that the recording box is GREYED OUT and I cannot adjust it. The PLAYBACK is clear and adjustments can be made but not with the recording side. When I try to record a voice message then nothing happens. What is my problem? is it sound drivers? I use the Soundblaster 16 AWE 32. Do I need to update the driver? or is it a simple setting somewhere?

Hope you can help

Mike

Yes, you need to install the correct drivers.

If you did an upgrade installation over W95, I recommend that you identify, and install ALL hardware device drivers.

Start with the drivers for the chipset on your motherboard.
Check out www.motherboards.org for help identifying the needed drivers.

Then, install the latest driver for your video card.

Then the sound card and modem.

1 caution, Creative does not provide support for 'OEM' sound cards.
If the specific model of Sound Blaster is not listed, you can spend a while finding the correct drivers.

One resource is www.driverguide.com

No, I did a complete format and put a fresh copy of Win98SE. Would installing updated drivers from creative for win98 do the job? as I noticed when I installed win98se it installed its own set of drivers for my card.

thanks again for your help.

Download AIDA (freeware) from here:
http://www.aida32.hu/aida-download.php?bit=32
This will show you what version your sound card is and also guide you to the webpage where updated drivers for your specific card may be obtained.

Copy/paste/remove spaces
that will get you to the downloads from creative for your sound card support, and yes 98 has a problem with the generic drivers it loads for the sound blaster line. Otherwise you could uninstall/reinstall sound devices from your cd's that came with the soundblaster if you have them. I'm not sure if that worked or not, there are downloads available though.
