Sound Stutter in RDP / Hyper-V

I have a Windows XP VM in Hyper-V set up on Windows 8.1 Pro that I access through RDP and RemoteApp to run legacy applications seamlessly (i.e., the applications from the VM appear in Windows 8.1, very similar to how Windows XP Mode works on Windows 7.) The overall experience is great, except for one weird problem I can’t fix no matter how hard I try: I constantly get sound stutter about every five to seven seconds in any application that uses audio.

Yes, I realize that Hyper-V is designed for server use and audio is not something it was designed for, but nevertheless, having audio from a Hyper-V machine is a nice feature and I have clients that specifically request it. So, I would like to figure out what is going on.

Researching this, I found a few posts about this issue on tech sites. In every single posting I’ve seen on this problem, the end result is typically that people throw their hands up in the air and say, “I give up, I’m going to use VMware.” But I don’t want to do that. I think Hyper-V is terrific, particularly in seamless mode via RemotApp. All I need is the solution to this one problem to have everything working perfectly.

And here is an interesting clue: when I access the server VM from a remote machine, there is NO stutter in the audio. The stutter ONLY happens when I am on the same machine, i.e., I am accessing the VM from the host computer that the VM is running on. If I access the VM from another machine, the audio doesn’t stutter.

Sorry for the long-winded explanation, but I wanted to explain all the details.

Any ideas on what could be going on?
