Spellchecker bogging hard drive down

By channa ·
We are experiencing the spell check option in Word 2000 slowing the computer down--the hard drive starts grinding for a long period of time. When the spell checker is turned off, the computer speeds up and stops grinding. Any suggestions? Thank you.

Q237765:

To resolve this problem, obtain Microsoft Office 2000 Service Release 1/1a (SR-1/SR-1a).

To obtain SR-1/SR-1a, click the article number below to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

To temporarily work around this problem, if the grammar check is occurring in the background, you can turn it off by using the following steps:

Click Options on the Tools menu.

Click the Spelling and Grammar tab.

Clear the Check grammar as you type check box.

Click OK .

Hi,

While Anna's answer is likely to be the one that fixes your problem, I thought I'd give you another couple of options in case it doesn't.

Try defragging your disk - if your user has made many custom additions to the dictionary, then these may be in a fragmented custom file spread all over the disk...

Check to make sure the PC has sufficient memory. The hard-drive grinding could also be zillions of operations to the pagefile. The machine should have a commit charge less than physical memory for maximum performance.

Cheers,
Tim.
