I have used 'spybot' to clean my computer down, it works well and routed out most problems. It also comes with a utility that prevents changes being made and will warn when registry changes and things are being made. This is free to download from www.download.com

I must admit i do not use spybot for day to day protection. Because i use a laptop, resources are important to me so running another program is not ideal.

I use a program called 'spyware blaster'. Again it is free to download at www.download.com. Once you install it, run it up, check for updates and enable protection. It currently prevents 3132 pieces of spyware and once they are prevented you can shut the program down.

Hope this helps

James

If you are unfamiliar with spyware/Malware, check out the articles at:
http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,4149,1522416,00.asp

If you have XP or Millenium, it has a System Restore:
You need to disable systen restore before removals tools will work.

Turn off System Restore:

Click Start > right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Select the "Turn off System Restore" check box and then click OK.
Click Yes when you receive the prompt to the turn off System Restore.

When you reboot, the system restore won't replace the automatically backed up file and reinfect you.

After you are virus free then attack SpyWare.
For the Spyware/Malware the two best Free scanners are AdAware SE at:
http://www.lavasoftusa.com/
And Spybot Search & Destroy version 1.3 at:
http://www.safer-networking.org/index.php?page=download
After Installing each check for updates before proceeding. Both have several cool tricks, Adaware has a custom search that can search your Hosts file and your archived files as well. SPpybot S&amp has an new program called Teatime that doesn't install by default you have to check the box ehn you are installing. SPybot S&amp also has an Immunization program.
adAware can be upgrade to a version that will block spyware.

Another excellent program is SpySweeper from www.webroot.com, it allows for one update and then you need to purchase to get anymore updates. It will find a lot that the two free one didn't.

I also use PestPatrol which also costs money. It is located at:
http://www.pestpatrol.com/ and they have a free pest scan if you can stay on the Internet long enough.

Turn on System Restore Back on
Clear the Turn off System Restore check box (or the Turn off System Restore on all drives check box), and then click OK.
Reduce the size of the System Restore to 3% or less. You don't need the 12% default.

Steve Gibson also has several really good security tools as well as his famous "Shields UP" tester at:
www.grc.com

When you are all clean, get the free ZoneAlarm 4.5 at:
http://download.zonelabs.com/bin/free/1043_zl/zapSetup_45_594_000.exe
This is a slighly older version, but the is a problem with version 5.0.
Or even better buy the Pro version.

If you don't have a virus scanner you can get a good free one at:
http://www.free-av.com/
or:
AVG v 7.0 at:
http://www.grisoft.com/us/us_updt7.php

It might be a good idea to also install "IESPyAd", it will add some custom (known) certificates to your block list so you don't get hijacked.

After removing the trojan and reboooting, rescan your system one more time then re-enable system restore.

SpySweeper is the best
I agree with all of the posts. After all the trials of all of the programs in all of the posts, I have to say that SpySweeper is my favorite. It catches what AdAware does not and has shields you can configure to block unwanted programs from downloading onto your pc without the users knowledge. Of course nothing is 100%
