SQL Server Installation.

By nkaram ·
Is it possible to install multiple copies of SQL server on the smae NT server or Domain?

If "NOT", what is the best configuration for SQL that will allow development and modifications, as well as allow the system to be in a production mode.

Appreciate all the help, thank you.

Bill.

Interesting question... as far as I know, it is not feasible to run two copies of SQL on the same server but having two different SQL servers in the same domain is definitely not a problem.

There are a boatload of advantages to having two separate SQL servers for test and production but the primary advantage is that you can take down the test machine (intentionally or unintentionally) without taking down the production server. I've seen systems run with a single SQL Server and separate databases for test and production but I've also seen a lot more down time in those systems.

The other advantage of having separate servers is it gives you a recovery server if a major disaster befalls your production server.

Thanks for the effort.

Multiple copies on the same domain is not the issue here. Need more looking into, I have read something about system partioning, a new feature in WIN2K, and a feature in SQL 2000, I wonder if that is applicable.

Thank you.

Since that question is so old, and you rejected all those answers, why don't you just close your question?
