standards for web development

By yapa ·
I am wondering if anyone if aware of any set of standards for web development. In particular I am interested in knowing if standards exist for user input - ie. the programmed response to the tab and enter keys, reaching the last character in an edit field, etc. I am also wondering if there are any established standards for date, social security, and telephone fields, etc.
Any set of standards, to use as a reference, would be greatly appreciated.

I don't know of any standards in particular but one thing that really annoys the rest of the world, if you're in the USA, is that NO OTHER COUNTRY USES ZIP CODES so please don't insist on having one if your target is international.

I agree about the zip codes. Yet, I am still hoping to see if any set standards for web development exist. Thanks.

http://www.w3.org/ is the place to go - they are the "The World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) develops interoperable technologies (specifications, guidelines, software, and tools)
to lead the Web to its full potential as a forum for information, commerce, communication, and collective understanding. On this page, you'll find W3C news as well as links to information about W3C technologies and getting involved in W3C.

Note though just because they have standards doesn't mean that any one follows them. Look at the browser war of IE and Netscape. They handel everything diffrently, even color shades are rendered diffrently between them, even though thw w3c specifies how a browser should display them.

I appreciate the lead to w3.org. Actually I have scoured their site, looking for this exact thing. However, being unable to find a concrete list/suggestion/idea/reference from their site, I pose the question here. Have you a particular page from the site?
Thank you.

I'll give it another shot....

I think this is more along the lines of what you want.

After looking around I would like to say one thing.... It doesnt' look like there is a universal specification on any operating shop for html and web programing. It really looks they just go with the flow and do what they want.

I think you are right. I looked high and low as well, and could not find any set standards. Thanks for the leads.
