Still Strugling

I Have downloaded movies that i want to burn to a disk that my standalone dvd player is connected to my tv can play.

There are various formats (i.e SVCD an avi).

What do these mean and what is the best?

I know that i have asked this question before, but i am a beginner at this subject and would like someone to give me a step by step instruction on what software i need and how to use it to my problem.

I am very sorry about keep asking this question but i would be grateful if you would help me out.
