Stopping a service

By Shs_Bulldog ·
Ok. I need to stop a servie so I can back it up. The servie name is "FairCom Server". So I type in net stop FairCom Server and then it says then it tells me the currect syntax for the net stop command. It works with one word commands like net stop Alerter. ????

Why dont you try it in User Manager, select the administrator account and check the box labeled "account disabled"? Just a WAG...

The earlier answer about using NET STOP from the command line is correct - if the service name has a space in it, you have to enclose the service name in quotes.

The other part of that is that you have to enter the service name exactly as it exists in the registry. This can be a problem with services that are not native to NT because that registry entry is not always what you think it is.

There is a tool in the NT Server Resource Kit called sc.exe you can use to query for this name (and also to stop the service remotely, for that matter) and it can be used as part of a batch file that stops the service, runs the backup, and restarts the service.

If you're doing this manually, then you can also use Server Manager (highlight the server name and click Computer, then Services)or you can access it via Control Panel-Services.

regards!
