strange behaviour of pentium 60-win98a

By europanorama ·
my customer tells me that he cannot boot the drive, even the system-disk does not boot. floppy is activated and is 1.44 in cmos-setup.
hdd is activated and-hopefully-the data have not been changed. computer is not on internet. no virus. here is the error: unvalid system, change data-carrier.(in german: ung?ltiges system-datentr?ger wechseln.
we have checked the system disk and have booted from it.
can i use a win98se-bootdisk and try to make fdisk /mbr and/or sys c

if nothing helps i will recopy the drive, after testing a second drive on the machine.

Start by double checking the CMOS settings for the drive.

Then, yes, boot with the W98 startup floppy.
Run fdisk /mbr
Then, run fdisk again, and verify that the primary DOS partition is marked as active.

Follow by running the sys c: command

That should take care of it.

Any number of things could cause this problem.
Once you get it to boot, run a thourough scandisk on the drive.
Then, make sure all device drivers are in place.

Also, even if not on-line, a virus could have been transmitted from an infected disk or transferred file.

i solved the problem: 1. the customer filled the harddrive with games. 2. i had to get access with the fdisk/mbr and sys c: commands. unfortunately sys.com cannot be seen on the bootdisk but only in the virtual drive. even from there i could not execute. because the pc was far away i could not check this. i have finally copied sys.com onto the diwsk itself and ran the commands, deleted games.. with cleansweep-monitor it could have been easier to procede.
