Strange black box

Here’s a funny thing!
Suddenly I have acquired a small (5 pixel) black box around the mouse pointer when using MS outlook in windows 2000. Outlook version 2000-sr1.
This does not happen in any other application that I have found and was first noticed after a power outage.
Any ideas?
