    strategic advice is needed at an important stage in life

    Locked

    by freshwind ·

    Good day,

    I am 46, I have 3 children (4, 7 and 14), I just came from Ukraine to America under the “United for Ukraine” program.

    All my life I worked as a technologist in the food industry, but it so happened that now my wife works (from 9 am to 5 pm) and I take care of the children… The youngest will be taken to school only for half a day, so I will look for some part-time work in the second shift from September.

    My parents, who are very simple people without a higher education, and their “go to the food field, you won’t be hungry” at that moment finally tipped the scales…

    But… 😉

    In my youth, I had a tendency to study (school, technical school and Lviv Polytechnic with honors) and an inexplicable attraction to computers in particular 🙂

    Therefore, I am asking the esteemed society of forum members for well-thought-out and balanced advice.

    I want to try to learn some IT direction, which:

    1. dynamically developing (specialists in this field are in demand);

    2. will allow working remotely;

    3. if possible, does not require deep fundamental knowledge (this is unnecessary time and not the fact that my aging gray matter is capable of this…). However, the first two points are a priority.

    Please do not write emotional and in your opinion witty short answers.

    Also, tell me how exactly I can understand which of the directions I like. Maybe there are some special tests…

    I will wait for meaningful letters with facts (before writing, consider that your advice can be decisive and you will change both my life and the future of my large family…).

    thank you

      Your desire to pivot into IT at this stage of your life is both courageous and timely. With the pandemic shifting many industries towards remote work, IT skills are more in demand than ever. Below are a few IT fields that could align with your needs:

      1. Salesforce: Salesforce is a customer relationship management solution that brings companies and customers together. It’s an integrated CRM platform that gives all your departments — including marketing, sales, commerce, and service — a single, shared view of every customer. Salesforce administrators and developers are in high demand and the field is known for its well-documented learning paths (like Trailhead).

      2. Web Development: This includes front-end development (HTML, CSS, JavaScript, AngularJS, ReactJS), back-end development (NodeJS, PHP, Python), and full-stack development. These roles are in high demand and usually provide flexibility to work remotely. Start with free resources like Codecademy or freeCodeCamp to get a feel for it.

      3. Data Analysis: If you’re more interested in the business side and have a knack for numbers and patterns, data analysis is a rapidly growing field. Skills in SQL, Python, and tools like Tableau are often required.

      4. Cloud Technologies: Cloud service providers like Amazon Web Services (AWS), Microsoft Azure, and Google Cloud offer certification programs. These technologies are in high demand and well-paid. They are a bit more complex but can be learned with dedicated effort.

      Remember, all these fields require practical experience – start working on personal projects, contribute to open-source projects, or try freelance jobs to build a portfolio.
