If you are running version 4.6, make sure you have the latest version of LiveUpdate.
In the scheduled task, go to the properties of your scheduled LiveUpdate and ensure that in the Run field is like this without the /s syntax. "C:\Program Files\Symantec\SMSMSE\4.6\Server\SAVFMSELive.exe"

After you done this, right click and select Run. Check your event viewer later.

I received the same error, I used the symantec exchange web client to install updates, then ran the live update again and it was successful. Hope this helps.

Symantec Mail security for Exchange

Most likely Symantec mail security for exchange virus definitions has expired or password mis-matach.
If you have support contract with SMSMSE then its better to create ticket for this support

But if you don't have support contract you can resolve the issue using following:
1. Unchecked the "Enable LiveUpdate" box on the LiveUpdate configuration page and saved the changes.
2. Restarted the Symantec Mail Security for Exchange service.
3. Checked the "Enable LiveUpdate" box on the LiveUpdate configuration page and saved the changes.
