Synchronizing Outlook without exchange ?

Is there a way to keep Outlook on a notebook and desktop synchronized? The user travels a lot and would like to hook up to his dektop when he comes back, synchronize his outlook (email, contacts etc)and then work on the desktop, till his next trip, then resync with the notebook.. any clues for a (relatively!)painless method?
